I think the most striking moment of the first day of the Transforming Minds session was seeing the video chronicling the unfortunate story of Lewis Blackman’s death in a hospital due to many failings by the medical system. This video stood out to me for many reasons. First, it was the initial introduction for our group into some of the topics we planned to discuss while here in Telluride. This video kicked off our discussions for the week, and it was clear that the video spoke to many people in our class, including myself. Lewis’ story showed what can unfortunately happen when there are various failings in the health care system. Among these failings were health care professionals making premature diagnoses, not communicating with the patient and patient’s family member’s properly, among many other things. I was moved, as I think most people were, by the mother’s willingness to share her story so as to prevent mistakes like this from happening again. Lewis’ story will certainly not be forgotten.
